Why There Are Sheep Everywhere at Walker Peak Cottages?

Why are there sheep everywhere at our Peak District Cottage?

If you've stayed at Walker Peak Cottages, our Peak District holiday cottage near Matlock, you may have noticed a recurring theme throughout the property

Sheep......

They're on the walls, perched on shelves, tucked into corners and scattered throughout the décor. Some guests spot them immediately, while others find themselves discovering new ones throughout their stay. It's become something of a talking point, with many visitors asking the same question:

"Why all the sheep?"

The answer is actually quite simple. It started with the place itself.

Sheep in the Peak District

Inspired by the Peak District Landscape

Guests staying at our Peak District holiday cottage often encounter sheep long before they arrive. Whether driving through Derbyshire's scenic countryside, exploring local walking trails or visiting nearby villages, sheep are a familiar part of the landscape and one of the things visitors remember most about a cottage break in the Peak District

Living and working in the Peak District, sheep are part of everyday life. They wander across hillsides, graze in fields beside country lanes and appear around almost every corner of the landscape. Whether you're heading out for a walk, exploring a local village or simply enjoying the view from a cottage window, you're never too far away from a sheep.

They are as much a part of Derbyshire's identity as dry stone walls, rolling hills and winding country paths.

When we first began thinking about how we wanted our Peak District Holiday Cottage to feel, we knew we didn't want to create a space that could be anywhere. We wanted it to reflect the character of the Peak District and celebrate what makes this area special.

The sheep seemed like the perfect place to start.

It Started with Just One or Two

Like many things, the theme wasn't planned from the beginning.

There was no grand design strategy and certainly no intention to create what guests now refer to as "the sheep cottage".

Instead, it began with a couple of decorative pieces that caught our eye. A picture here and a quirky ornament there.

Before long, a pattern began to emerge.

Every time we found a sheep-themed piece with a bit of character, it seemed to find its way into the collection. Some were charming, some were humorous and some were simply too unique to resist.

What started as a few decorative touches gradually developed into a theme that gave the cottage it's own personality.

I even sourced 'sheep' material earlier this year so I could make new cushions for the sofa.

More Than Just Décor

One of the things we have learned over the years is that guests remember the little details.

People may not remember the exact colour of a wall or where a particular lamp stood, but they often remember the things that made them smile.

The sheep seem to do exactly that.

They spark conversations, become part of holiday photographs and often encourage guests to look around more closely to see how many they can find.

Children, in particular, seem to enjoy spotting them. Some have turned it into a game, searching from room to room to discover every sheep hidden throughout the cottage.

Adults are just as enthusiastic. It's surprising how many conversations have started with a laugh and the question, "Have you seen the sheep in the bedroom?" or "Did you spot the one on the shelf?"

Those moments are exactly what we hoped to create.

Creating a Cottage with Character

When choosing décor, it can be tempting to follow trends or create something that looks like every other holiday property.

While there is certainly a place for modern interiors and neutral styling, we wanted Walker Peak Cottages to feel welcoming, memorable and full of character.

The sheep helped us achieve that.

Rather than being simply decorative, they became part of the cottage's story. They help create a sense of place and connect the indoors with the stunning countryside that surrounds us.

Guests don't just stay in a holiday cottage. They stay in a Peak District holiday cottage.

The sheep are a gentle reminder of that connection.

Guests Have Embraced the Flock

One of the greatest compliments we receive is when returning guests mention the sheep.

Some have favourite pieces that they look forward to seeing again. Others enjoy discovering new additions that have appeared since their last visit.

It's lovely to see something that began so naturally become such an important part of the guest experience.

Over time, the sheep have become something of an unofficial mascot for Walker Peak Cottages and a feature that many guests associate with their stay.

We've even been gifted new sheep by some of our lovely guests.

What began as a simple decorating choice has evolved into a small tradition that brings a smile to visitors of all ages.
